Bread is a very popular food item in India. It is easy to prepare and convenient to consume-
whether you are at home or outside. Recently there have been some concerns about the health benefits of bread.

In response to such concerns, many new variants have come to the market-brown bread and multi-grain bread. The fact is even white bread can be an affordable and nutritious food. Here is why:

  • Bread contains many nutrients such as iron, calcium and B vitamins.
  • Bread is low in fat and low in sugar. A report by the Irish Universities Nutrition Alliance¹ (IUNA) found that white bread only contributes 1% to our daily fat and sugar intake.

Myth 1:
Bread makes me FAT

Reality:

There is little or no fat or sugar in bread. A slice of bread has the same number of
calories as a large apple.

Myth 2:
Bread causes Bloating

Reality:

A review by the British Nutrition Foundation¹ concluded that there was no scientific evidence that regular consumption of bread caused bloating or digestive problems.

Myth 3:
Bread is Unhealthy

Reality:

Bread is an excellent source of proteins, vitamins especially the B Vitamins, Thiamine, Niacin, and Folic Acid; minerals (Calcium and iron); fiber and complex carbohydrates. It is also low in sugar and fat.

Preparation of various kinds of healthy breads are now trending. Healthy bread preparation includes gluten free bread, protein rich bread, fibre rich bread, sprouted bread, seeds bread. flours enriched with a particular vitamin or mineral are also being used for baking bread.

All these healthy alternatives have come up due to the changing consumer lifestyle.

Functional foods in the bakery sector are evolving day by day, bakery items such as cookies and biscuits are enriched with protein, fibre and vitamins and minerals. Cakes and biscuits which can boost your immunity have also been developed by incorporating ginger, turmeric and citrus fruits which are considered to boost the immunity.
